As the warmth of spring comes to Destin, the area bursts to life with colorful flowers and renewed energy. With ideal weather, spring is the perfect time to participate in watersports like paddleboarding, kayaking or enjoying the crystal clear waters at one of Destin’s beautiful beaches.Spring in Destin is also a prime time for fishing enthusiasts, as the waters teem with a variety of species like redfish, cobia, and red snapper.

In April, the South Walton Beaches Food and Wine Festival and the Sandestin Wine Festival, both celebrate fine wines and the local food scene, with tastings, live entertainment and culinary demonstrations. May brings the Emerald Coast Open, a fishing tournament targeting invasive lionfish, with a restaurant week featuring the delicious fish as well.

Crab Island - Destin Florida

Summer in Destin means endless sunshine and loads of outdoor fun. With average temperatures in the low 90s (F) and more humidity, this is the perfect time of year to spend time in the balmy 85° waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Summer is a peak tourist season, bringing a lively atmosphere to Destin’s beaches and attractions. While you may encounter larger crowds, the abundance of activities and events ensures there’s never a dull moment.

The hot and sunny summer weather makes it a great season to spend time soaking up the sun on white sand beaches, or enjoying the warm Gulf waters. Stand-up paddleboarding, snorkeling, parasailing and surfing are some of the exciting watersports you can try, and cooling off at a local water park is always a great option. Deep-sea fishing charters and boat tours are also a popular way to get out on the water, with excursions to lively Crab Island kicking into high gear.

Key events in summer include the prestigious Emerald Coast Blue Marlin Classic Fishing Tournament and the Emerald Coast Poker Run, an annual boating scavenger hunt. The 4th of July is a big celebration as well, with a food truck festival, live performances and a fireworks display over Destin Harbor.

Fall brings a gradual decrease in the heat and humidity, with average temperatures in the low 80s (F), and water temperatures hovering in the mid-70s. This time of year is considered a shoulder season, as summer crowds taper off and Destin transitions into a more tranquil atmosphere.

The ideal weather conditions in fall make it a very comfortable season for outdoor activities. The waters of the Gulf remain warm enough for watersports and cooler temperatures bring several fish species closer to shore, making it an excellent season for fishing. Golfers will find the local courses to be less crowded and it’s a great season for nature lovers to explore the area’s hiking and bird watching areas like Henderson Beach State Park and Topsail Hill Preserve State Park.

Popular fall events celebrate the rich maritime heritage of the area, like the month-long Destin Fishing Rodeo, and the Destin Seafood Festival, which spotlights the region’s best seafood alongside live entertainment and local artisans. The Baytowne Wharf Beer Festival is a two-day event where you can sample craft brews from local and regional breweries.
